Owakanda Surf School is a surf school in Rathgama, on the Galle Road, about 8 km south of Hikkaduwa and 12 km north of Galle. It was founded in 2023 by Damila, a surfer with more than fifteen years of experience who previously taught for three years at another school on the coast.
The Owakanda break is quieter than the busy waves of Hikkaduwa in peak season and suits beginners as well as surfers looking to improve. Lessons run in small groups with a local instructor, and the price includes a board, a rash guard and coaching.
The school offers lessons for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, tailor-made multi-day packages and extras such as a beach barbecue. You can walk in or book on WhatsApp. A second base operates in Arugam Bay on the east coast.
