School Presentation
AlturaKites is a kitesurf and stand up paddle school founded in 2004 in Altura, in the municipality of Castro Marim, in the eastern Algarve. Its owner, Nuno Gomes, is an instructor certified by the IPDJ, the Portuguese sports institute, the only legal certification for teaching kitesurfing in Portugal. The school says it was the first in the county to devote itself to the sport; it is registered with the RNAAT (Turismo de Portugal) under no. 981/2017.
It teaches all year round, mainly at Altura but also at Manta Rota, Monte Gordo, Cacela Velha, Vila Real de Santo Antonio, Tavira, Faro and other spots, as well as in the Lisbon area. The course has three 2-hour stages (theory and kite control on land; directed body drag and downwind in the water; first rides on the board and going upwind), 6- or 12-hour packs, private lessons and a sand-only baptism (minimum 4 people).
The school also offers kite hydrofoil, stand up paddle lessons and tours at Altura, Cacela Velha and Manta Rota (including a roughly 3-hour ride around Cacela Velha island with an instructor), sales of new and used kite gear, equipment repairs, and a birdwatching activity.
