Bidarteko Surf Club
Plage du Centre, rue de la Plage, 64210 Bidart · Nouvelle-Aquitaine · France
Description
Bidarteko Surf Club is a volunteer-run surf club in Bidart, founded in 1990 by Pierre Bergé together with Thierry Maisonave and Alain Etchelecou. Surfing in Bidart had previously been part of a Basque pelota club and had disappeared during the 1980s. Two years after its creation, the club was given the organisation of the first stage of the 1993 French Cup by the federation and had 120 licensed members at the time. It has since been led by a succession of volunteer presidents, Thomas La Fonta being the current one.
The club is affiliated with the French Surfing Federation and offers group lessons in July and August for holidaymakers, works councils and school groups: "Grommet" packages for ages 6 to 11 (one-hour sessions) and "Bidarteko" packages from age 11 (1.5-hour sessions), from 1 to 5 sessions per week, in groups of up to 8. Lessons suit beginners as well as surfers who want to improve.
Teaching is provided by a state-qualified instructor. A board and wetsuit are supplied, and the federation's insurance licence is included. Registration is done through a form to download from the club's website, which also reports on club life: in 2026, a new board of directors and a fundraising campaign to represent France at the 2027 world club championships in Australia.
