kitesurf, wingfoil and windsurf spots in Denmark

A flat country surrounded by water, and one of the windiest in Europe: Denmark brings together North Sea waves nicknamed "Cold Hawaii", shallow fjords and beaches where you drive right to the water's edge.

356 spots listed. Rideable days are computed from two full years of readings (2024 and 2025), spot by spot.

Denmark: an overview

The land of wind

In Denmark, wind is a national resource. The country was one of the world's pioneers of wind power, and its turbines are as much part of the landscape as its dunes. For board sports, that is a blessing: people ride here all year round, and the number of riders relative to the population is among the highest in the world.

The riding culture is simple, sporty and closely tied to nature. People come to the beach as a family, ride in all weathers, and scrupulously respect the nature reserves that border most spots.

Cold Hawaii and the fjords

The west coast of Jutland, facing the North Sea, takes a powerful swell. Around Klitmøller, in Thy National Park, it has given rise to an internationally renowned wave scene nicknamed "Cold Hawaii": world-class waves in cold water and Nordic light. The Windsurfing World Cup stops there regularly.

Just behind the dunes, Denmark hides huge sheltered waters. Ringkøbing Fjord, a shallow brackish lagoon, offers flat water a few minutes from the North Sea, ideal for freeride, freestyle and wing foiling. Further south, the Wadden Sea uncovers vast sand flats at low tide.

Islands and beaches

The country has hundreds of islands. Some, like Rømø or Fanø, have beaches so wide you drive right onto the riding area. Others, like Bornholm in the Baltic, offer white sand and clear water, far from the North Sea.

The best regions

Good to know

  • Cold water: a thick wetsuit, boots and gloves for much of the year. The most dedicated riders sail all winter.
  • Protected nature: national parks, bird reserves and nesting areas close some sectors, notably on Ringkøbing Fjord. Signs are the authority.
  • Cold Hawaii waves: powerful swell, currents and rocky bottoms in places. These spots are for experienced riders only.
  • Drivable beaches: on Rømø, Fanø or at Løkken you can drive on the sand, with specific speed and traffic rules.
  • Camping: wild camping is banned outside designated areas; campsites and simple shelters are plentiful.
