China: characteristic landscape

kitesurf and wingfoil spots in China

A tropical island nicknamed the "Hawaii of China", a strait among the windiest in Asia, bays at the foot of megacities: China is one of the fastest-growing board sports scenes in the world, and one of the least known to Western riders.

China: an overview

A young scene, growing fast

For a long time, China was a country of factories rather than spots: a large share of the gear sold around the world is made there. In around ten years, that has changed. An urban middle class has fallen for kitesurfing, wing foiling and windsurfing, clubs and schools have opened along the coast, and international competitions now take place there.

Riding remains concentrated around a few hubs — islands, bays near big cities, beach resorts — with an enthusiastic, often young community and a warm welcome for foreign riders who make the trip.

Seasons that depend on latitude

China's coast stretches thousands of kilometres, from the Bohai Gulf down to the tropics, and the seasons change completely from one end to the other. In the south, Hainan Island offers warm water and a wind season through winter and spring. Along the Taiwan Strait, the relief and the corridor between the coasts speed up the wind for much of the year. In the north, it is the summer sea breeze that brings the spots to life.

A trip to plan

Riding in China takes a little organisation. Clubs and schools are often the best way in: they know the access points, the beach rules and the right seasons. And there is the typhoon season to reckon with, which affects the east and south of the country in summer and autumn.

The best regions

Hainan Island

The "Hawaii of China": golden sand beaches, palm trees, warm water and winter and spring wind. The most accessible destination for a first trip.

Fujian and the Taiwan Strait

Islands and bays exposed to one of the most powerful wind corridors in Asia. Sporty conditions for much of the year, for experienced riders.

Guangdong

From Shenzhen to Shantou, sheltered bays at the foot of the hills, a few hours from the Pearl River Delta megacities and Hong Kong.

Zhejiang and the Zhoushan archipelago

Hundreds of islands off Shanghai, beaches and temples, and a scene that is still low-key.

Shandong and the Bohai Gulf

In the north, coastal cities such as Qingdao and a summer season driven by the sea breeze.

Good to know

  • Typhoons: summer and autumn bring typhoons to the east and south of the country. Watch the warnings and never ride as one approaches.
  • Regional seasons: Hainan and the south are best in winter and spring, the north during the summer sea breeze.
  • Beach access: many beaches are managed by resorts or local authorities. Local clubs know the permitted access points.
  • Language and apps: English is little spoken outside the big cities, and several common apps do not work in mainland China. Set up your tools before you leave.
  • Water temperature: warm in Hainan, cool to cold on the northern coast outside summer.
