On the water
Strait-style water body with moderate to heavy chop. Very powerful tidal currents running through the strait. Water is cold (12-17°C/54-63°F), a 4/3 or 3/2 wetsuit is necessary. Muddy and rocky bottom in places. The narrowness of the strait amplifies both wind and currents. Water body can become very rough when wind opposes current.
Hazards
Extremely strong tidal currents in the Carquinez Strait — risk of being swept away. Heavy commercial maritime traffic (cargo ships, tankers). Rocks and submerged structures near shore. Very strong and gusty winds (25-40 knots) due to Venturi effect. Cold water increasing hypothermia risk. Benicia-Martinez Bridge pilings to absolutely avoid.
