On the water

Cold bay water (8-14°C), 4/3 wetsuit recommended year-round. Shallow bay waters with muddy and sandy bottom. Significant tidal currents, especially in the main channels. At low tide, vast mudflats are exposed, significantly reducing the navigable waterway. Flat to moderately choppy surface without ocean waves. Regular winds at 12-22 knots.

Hazards

Powerful tidal currents in Grays Harbor, especially in channels. Do not drift toward the bay entrance and the Grays Harbor bar (dangerous). Extensive mudflats at low tide: risk of getting stuck. Cold water risking hypothermia. Protected wildlife areas (migratory birds): respect seasonal restrictions. Frequent coastal fog. Fishing boat traffic in the bay.
