Overview

Key West Sigsbee is a kitesurfing spot located in the northwest part of Key West, on the Gulf of Mexico side, near the Sigsbee naval housing area. The spot offers access to the shallow waters of the NW Channel with enjoyable flat water conditions. The easterly trade winds blow side-shore, providing regular sessions from November to May. This spot is an excellent alternative to Smathers Beach (Atlantic side) when winds are from the north. The atmosphere is more local and less touristy than south Key West.

On the water

The gulf side water body offers flat water to light chop conditions with a sandy bottom. Depth is moderate and varies with the tide. In easterly trade winds, conditions are excellent with flat water. In northerly winds (cold fronts), the water body receives a slight fetch from the gulf but remains manageable. The water is warm year-round. The NW Channel provides a wide riding area.

Hazards

Tidal currents are present in the NW Channel and can be strong during tide changes. Maritime traffic is significant — fishing boats, shuttles and military vessels frequent the area. Respect restricted navigation zones related to the naval base. Watch for stingrays in shallow areas.
