Overview

Spanish Harbor Key is a kitesurfing spot located in the Lower Keys, on the Gulf of Mexico side. This spot offers access to shallow, flat waters with a sandy bottom, ideal for flat water riding. The easterly trade winds blow side-shore across the gulf water body. The spot is less crowded than Marathon or Key West spots, offering peaceful sessions in a preserved natural setting. The proximity to Big Pine Key and the National Key Deer Refuge adds to the wild character of this area of the Keys.

On the water

The gulf side water body is shallow with a sandy bottom. In trade winds, conditions are flat to lightly choppy. Depth varies significantly with the tide — at low tide, large sand areas are accessible on foot. The water is warm and clear. The area offers an extensive riding space toward the Gulf of Mexico.

Hazards

Tidal currents can be present in the passes between islands. At low tide, some areas become too shallow to ride — check tide schedules. Watch for stingrays and small sharks in shallow waters. Protected natural area — respect the environment and local wildlife.
