Overview

Kitesurf spot at the Moisie River beach, east of Sept-Îles on the North Shore. The mouth of the Moisie River, a famous salmon river, creates a vast sandy area where the river meets the Gulf of St. Lawrence. It's one of Quebec's wildest and most spectacular spots, with a landscape of dunes, endless beaches and boreal forest. The water is completely open to the Gulf with unlimited fetch.

On the water

Gulf of St. Lawrence at the Moisie River mouth. Very cold salt water (6-10°C in summer), 5/3 wetsuit or drysuit recommended. Gulf waves possible, sometimes powerful. Sandy bottom. River current combined with tidal currents at the mouth. Moderate tides (1-2m). Conditions can be committed.

Hazards

Extremely cold water — rapid hypothermia risk. Strong currents at the river mouth. Gulf waves can be powerful. Very isolated area — no services nearby. Black bears possible in the area. Moisie River is protected — do not ride upstream. Bring emergency communication.
