On the water
St. Lawrence River around Île d'Orléans. 3-4m tides. Fresh to brackish water, cold (12-16°C in summer). Strong currents as the river splits into two channels around the island. Rocky and sandy bottom. Tidal current adds to river current, creating demanding conditions. Tidal flats at low tide on some sides.
Hazards
Very strong currents around the island — combination of river current and tides. Dangerous rocky bottom. Intense ferry and commercial shipping. The island has only one bridge access — in case of problems, rescue can be slow. Cold water. Do not ride without thorough knowledge of local currents.
