Overview

Virginia Key is a kitesurfing spot located on the island of the same name between Miami and Key Biscayne, on the Atlantic side. The island offers ocean access with wilder, less crowded conditions than nearby Hobie Beach or Crandon Park. Virginia Key benefits from easterly trade winds as direct onshore, providing chop to wave conditions depending on wind strength. The spot is popular with riders seeking ocean conditions without the Miami Beach crowds. Virginia Key is also home to the Miami Seaquarium and preserved natural areas.

On the water

The water body faces the Atlantic with a sandy and rocky bottom in some areas. In easterly trade winds, conditions are choppy with possible waves of 1.5-5 feet. The water is warm and clear. The coast is more natural than Miami Beach, with fewer amenities. The riding area is vast but watch for reef zones and submerged rocks.

Hazards

Rocky bottom and reefs in some areas — be careful in case of falls. Currents along the coast can cause drift. Less monitored area than main beaches — riding with a buddy is recommended. In westerly winds, dangerous offshore conditions. Check park access conditions.
