On the water

Cold to cool Puget Sound water (8-14°C), 4/3 wetsuit recommended year-round, 5/3 in winter. Puget Sound waters are calmer than the Pacific Ocean, with moderate chop during thermal winds. Significant tidal currents in the strait. Mixed bottom (sand, pebbles, mud). Southwesterly thermal winds blow at 12-20 knots in summer.

Hazards

Powerful tidal currents in Puget Sound that can sweep riders. Heavy maritime traffic: ferries, cargo ships, recreational boats, and submarines (Bremerton naval base nearby). Cold water year-round risking hypothermia. Rocks and pebbles around the lighthouse park. Regulated navigation zones to respect. Tacoma/Vashon Island ferry operating nearby. Limited launch space in the small park.
