Overview

Fish Boma is a spot located in the Goukamma Nature Reserve, right next to the Goukamma River mouth. The name refers to the old fish enclosures (bomas) historically used in the area. This is a wild and isolated spot, with a beach exposed to southern swells. Reserved for experienced riders due to isolation and committing conditions.

The spot works with SE to SW wind. Similar conditions to Goukamma Mouth but slightly more sheltered from the mouth currents. Exposed ocean beach with consistent waves. Rideable at all tides. Spot for committing sessions in a wild setting.

On the water

Waves of 1.5-3 metres. Sandy bottom. Strong chop in sustained wind. Less current than at the actual mouth but watch for drift. Water temperature between 17-20°C. 3/2 wetsuit in summer, 4/3 in winter.

Parking

Access via the Goukamma Nature Reserve, same conditions as for Goukamma Mouth. Dirt road, limited parking. Reserve entry fee applies. Walking required to reach the spot. No facilities on site.

Wind specificities

Same characteristics as neighbouring Goukamma Mouth. Southeast wind blows side-onshore, strengthened by the open and exposed coast. Typical strength of 18-28 knots in summer. The area is very exposed with no natural protection. Southwest wind can be very strong during cold fronts.

Hazards

Spot isolation — main danger. No rescue services nearby. Sharks present in this fish-rich area. Powerful shore break. Proximity to the mouth and its currents. Never ride alone. Carry a communication device and inform someone of your session.
