Overview

Keurboomstrand is a long wild beach located east of Plettenberg Bay, beyond the Keurbooms River mouth. This sandy beach stretches for kilometres in an unspoiled natural setting, between indigenous forest and ocean. Waves can be substantial and conditions more committing than at Lookout Beach. It is a spot for experienced riders seeking wave conditions in a wild setting.

On the water

Waves of 1.5-3 metres, sometimes more during large SW swells. Sandy bottom. Strong chop in sustained wind. Frequent lateral currents. Water temperature between 18-22°C. 3/2 wetsuit in summer, 4/3 in winter. Good wave riding spot for confirmed riders.

Parking

Access via Keurboomstrand village, from the N2 east of Plettenberg Bay. Small parking at the end of the access road. Dirt track possible for some beach access points. No facilities on the beach. Bring water and supplies. Quiet residential village.

Wind specificities

Southeast wind blows side-onshore, often stronger than at Lookout Beach due to the open coast exposure. Typical strength of 18-28 knots in summer. SW/WSW wind is onshore with powerful conditions. The coast is totally exposed with no protection, wind arrives unobstructed from the ocean.

Hazards

Very powerful shore break during large swells. Strong lateral currents. Isolated spot with no lifeguard or nearby rescue. Sharks present — known area for great whites (Plettenberg Bay). Never ride alone. Conditions can become very committing quickly. Carry a communication device.
