Overview

Boneyards is a surf and kite spot located just north of Supertubes in Jeffreys Bay. The name refers to whale bone remains historically found on this beach. It is a transition zone between the sandy beach and the Supertubes reef, with a mix of sandy and rocky bottom. Waves are good quality during SW swells. Spot for advanced riders due to reef proximity and committing conditions.

The spot works with SE wind and SW swell. Transition zone between sand and reef. Waves are less perfect than Supertubes but more accessible. Less tension with surfers than at Supertubes. Rideable at all tides. Watch for reef at low tide. Good compromise for wave riding without the Supertubes stress.

On the water

Waves of 1-2.5 metres. Mixed sand/reef bottom — watch for rocky areas. Currents along the reef. Water temperature between 18-22°C. 3/2 wetsuit in summer, 4/3 in winter. Chop in sustained SE wind.

Parking

Access from Supertubes parking or from J-Bay main beach. Some parking spaces along the coastal road. Walking possible from J-Bay centre along the beach.

Wind specificities

Southeast wind blows side-onshore. Typical strength of 15-25 knots in summer (October-March). Same characteristics as J-Bay main beach. SE thermal picks up in the afternoon. Similar but more exposed conditions than the main beach due to the more advanced position.

Hazards

Rocky reef in some areas — risk of injury. Proximity to Supertubes and its surfers — respect zones. Sharks present (great whites). Currents along the reef. Shore break during large swells. Do not ride without knowing the reef layout.
