Lake Atitlán is one of Guatemala's most spectacular kitesurfing spots, located at 1,556 m altitude in the Sololá department. This stunningly beautiful volcanic lake is surrounded by three majestic volcanoes that create a natural wind tunnel effect.
Thermal south wind (Xocomil) blows mainly in the afternoon, with the most consistent conditions from October to December. Wind speed ranges between 8-17 knots. The water is crystal clear but cold — a wetsuit is recommended.
The shoreline is rocky and steep, making kite launching and landing difficult. It's advisable to take a boat from Panajachel or Santiago Atitlán to reach Isla de los Gatos. The spot suits intermediate to advanced riders due to difficult access and variable wind conditions.
