Lo Pagán is the main kite hub on Europe's largest saltwater lagoon — the Mar Menor (170 km², 70 km of shoreline). The lagoon is separated from the Mediterranean by La Manga, a 22 km sand strip. Water is extremely shallow (wade out 50m and still waist-deep), flat (no tide, no current, no waves), and warm year-round (never below 18°C). This makes it arguably the safest and easiest place to learn kitesurfing in Spain. Lo Pagán sits on the north shore in San Pedro del Pinatar. Nearby: famous salt flats with flamingos, therapeutic mud baths on Isla del Ciervo. Wind is primarily thermal SW in spring/summer (10-20 kts) — light wind region, foil gear recommended. La Manga side has the schools. 1.5h from Alicante airport, 20 min from Murcia. Warmest mainland region of Spain — average 18°C year-round, 300+ days of sunshine.
Multiple kite schools around the Mar Menor:
Jaws Murcia — Los Narejos/Los Alcázares area.
Maskite Maswind — Playa Paraíso / La Manga.
Various schools congregate on the La Manga side near Isla del Ciervo.
Spring (April-June): BEST SEASON. Thermal SW develops nicely, 10-20 kts. Warm, not yet peak tourist season. Calm shallow waters perfect for learning.
Summer (July-August): Thermal continues but tourist crowds. Kite restricted on popular beaches — use authorized zones. Air 35-40°C, water 25-30°C. No wetsuit needed.
Autumn (September-November): Good period — fewer people, still thermal days. Small waves on Mediterranean side possible with E/NE storms.
Winter (December-March): E and NE winds more frequent. Lighter, cooler. Still rideable — water never below 18°C. La Plana Beach recommended for winter winds.
FLAT. SHALLOW. WARM. The Mar Menor is a giant bathtub — no tide, no current, no waves. You can walk out 50-100m and still touch bottom. Sandy/muddy bottom. Water never below 18°C (no wetsuit needed March-November, shorty in winter). Water 25-30°C in summer. Visibility varies — algae blooms have affected clarity in recent years. The easiest, safest water conditions for learning kitesurf in southern Europe.

Lo Pagán beachfront — free parking along the promenade, easy off-season, trickier summer. San Pedro del Pinatar town nearby. Restaurants, cafes along the waterfront. From Alicante airport: AP-7 south → RM-19, ~1.5h. From Murcia: 20 min east. Nearest airports: Murcia-San Javier (10 min — if open), Alicante (1.5h), Murcia-Corvera (45 min).
⚠️ Light wind region — average 10-20 kts. Bring big kites (12-15m) or foil gear. Many days under 12 kts.
⚠️ Kite restricted in summer on busy beaches — check authorized zones. Tourism peak July-August.
⚠️ Mar Menor environmental issues — lagoon has suffered algae blooms and ecological degradation in recent years. Water quality varies. Check local conditions.
⚠️ Shallow mud bottom can trap fins — use short fins or foil.
⚠️ Extremely hot in summer (35-40°C air) — sun protection essential.
Thermal SW — Main wind. Spring/summer. 10-20 kts, afternoon pick-up. Light wind — bring big kites (12-15m) or foil gear. Rarely above 20 kts. Good days most weeks April-July.
NE (Gregal) — Works well on north shore (Lo Pagán). Side-onshore. Also creates flat water. Year-round but more winter.
E (Llevant) — Cross-shore north side. Can generate some chop in the lagoon. All year.
N (Tramuntana) — Winter. Offshore on the north shore, side-shore on east side. Cold.
⚠️ Light wind region overall — expect 10-15 kts average. Many sub-12 kt days. Foil transforms the Mar Menor experience. Without foil, expect frustrating light wind days.
