Overview

Isola delle Correnti is the southernmost point of Sicily, located at the extreme southeastern tip of the island. This legendary spot owes its name to the small island connected to the coast by a submersible sandbank and the strong currents that flow through the channel between Sicily and the island. It is an exposed and powerful spot, appreciated by experienced kiters for its wave and current conditions. The spot offers two different bodies of water depending on the wind direction: east side (Ionian Sea) with waves from Sirocco and Grecale, and west side (Sicily Channel) more sheltered from Maestrale. The wild setting and beauty of the place make it one of the most photogenic spots in Sicily.

On the water

Two bodies of water depending on the wind: east side, Ionian Sea with waves and current; west side, Sicily Channel calmer. The bottom is sandy with rocky areas near the island. Crystal-clear and warm water in summer.

Parking

Free parking along the access road to the point. In summer, a paid parking area is set up near the beach (5-8 euros/day). Access is from Portopalo di Capo Passero following signs to Isola delle Correnti.

Wind specificities

The spot is exposed to most winds thanks to its headland position. The Sirocco (SE) and Grecale (NE) generate waves on the Ionian side. The Maestrale (NW) offers flatter conditions on the Sicily Channel side. The Libeccio (SW) is also rideable. Thermal winds are less pronounced than at Lo Stagnone.

Hazards

Exposed spot with strong currents between the island and the coast. Sailing in the channel is not recommended for beginners. The rocks around the islet are dangerous, especially in swell. The current can carry kiters out to sea. In strong Sirocco, waves can be substantial on the east side.
