Spot de sardinia | alghero

sardinia | alghero

sardinia | alghero

Overview

Alghero, nicknamed the "Sardinian Barceloneta" for its Catalan architecture, offers a versatile kitesurf spot on the northwest coast of Sardinia. Kiting typically takes place north or south of the town, away from tourist areas. The dominant wind is the Mistral (northwest), sometimes violent and sustained. The Maestrale blows regularly in summer from the north, delivering powerful sessions. The spot is surrounded by beautiful wild nature with characteristic limestone cliffs.

Technical details of sardinia | alghero spot

Spot currently open :-)
Spot functioning

The Alghero area has several launch points along the Lido di Alghero and the beaches north of the city. The main spot is the long sandy beach south of the historic centre. No formal zone organisation — self-manage with other beach users. Kite schools operate in the area in summer. The city offers full services within walking distance.

Spot opening date

Open all year round

Open year-round. Main season: May to October. Alghero is one of the most accessible kite destinations in northwest Sardinia with a direct airport. Best wind: June to September.

Required level

Intermediate

On the water

Open sea with moderate chop of 0.3 to 0.8m in Maestrale conditions. Sandy bottom near shore transitioning to posidonia at depth. The Gulf of Alghero offers a relatively smooth sea surface in westerly and northwest winds. Clean, clear water typical of the northwest Sardinian coast.

Parking

Parking available along the Alghero seafront or near beaches to the north (Lido di Alghero). In summer, parking gets congested — early morning arrival recommended.

Wind specificities

Alghero receives the Maestrale (northwest) as the dominant wind, channelled along the gulf between Capo Caccia and Capo Marargiu. The wind typically builds from 10am to 6pm, 15 to 28 knots in summer, with a thermal reinforcement in the afternoon. The city's buildings and the headland can create some turbulence close to shore — move a few hundred metres offshore for cleaner air. The Tramontane (north) provides additional sessions in spring and autumn.

Hazards

Mistral can be violent with strong gusts — beginners should avoid strong wind conditions. Rocky entry points in some areas. Boat traffic to watch out for. Check regulated swimming zones during summer season.
