Overview
Lago di Santa Croce is one of the best kitesurfing spots in northern Italy, located in the province of Belluno in Veneto. This alpine lake at 386m altitude offers exceptional and consistent thermal wind conditions, attracting riders from all over Italy and Europe. The lake benefits from a powerful and regular afternoon thermal wind, channeled by the valley and amplified by the Venturi effect between the surrounding mountains. This southeast wind typically blows from 1pm to 6pm with intensities of 15 to 30 knots, offering ideal conditions for kitesurfing. The flat water, fresh water and spectacular mountain setting make it a must-visit spot in the Italian Pre-Alps.

Spot functioning
The spot works mainly in the afternoon with the southeast thermal. The launch is from the south shore (Farra d'Alpago area) where areas are dedicated to kiting. Several kite schools operate on site. The spot is regulated with specific zones for swimming, kiting and sailing.

On the water
Flat water, ideal for freestyle and freeride. Fresh lake water, temperature from 15°C in spring to 23°C in summer. Progressive depth from the south shore. Sandy and muddy bottom. Excellent water visibility.
Parking
Large free parking on the south shore of the lake, on the Farra d'Alpago side. Easy access from the A27 motorway (Farra d'Alpago exit). Sufficient space for vans and motorhomes. In summer, arrive before 12pm to be sure of getting a space on weekends.
Wind specificities
The main thermal wind comes from the southeast, channeled by the Piave valley and amplified by the Venturi effect of the mountains. It typically sets in around 12pm-1pm and blows until 5pm-6pm, with a peak between 2pm and 4pm. Intensity varies from 15 to 30 knots depending on the season and conditions. In the morning, a light offshore wind (northwest) may blow. The best months are June to September.
Hazards
The thermal wind can pick up very quickly and reach 30+ knots. Cold water in spring (wetsuit required). The lake is not very large, be careful not to drift towards the rocky shores. Respect the designated kite zones. Thunderstorms possible in the late afternoon in summer.
