Overview
Capo Suvero, at Gizzeria Lido, is the most famous kitesurfing spot in Calabria and one of the best in Italy. This spot has hosted PWA windsurf world championship events and numerous international kitesurfing competitions. Located on the Tyrrhenian coast facing the Gulf of Sant'Eufemia, it benefits from a powerful and consistent thermal wind in summer. The sandy beach stretches for several kilometers with easy water access. The northwest thermal wind (Maestrale) sets in every summer afternoon with remarkable consistency, blowing between 18 and 30 knots. Conditions can be demanding with chop and waves, making it a spot for intermediate to expert riders.

Spot functioning
The NW thermal wind is cross-shore to cross-onshore on this west-facing beach. It sets in by late morning and reaches its peak between 2pm and 5pm. The Sirocco (SE) sometimes blows in spring and autumn, offshore on this spot (less interesting).

On the water
Body of water with chop and small waves in sustained thermal wind. The bottom is sandy and progressive. Warm water in summer (24-27°C). Conditions can become quite challenging in strong Maestrale with waves of 1 to 1.5m.
Parking
Large free parking along the beach. Several access points from the SS18 coastal road. Kite schools have their own spaces. Easy access from Lamezia Terme airport (15 minutes).
Wind specificities
The Maestrale (NW) thermal wind is exceptionally consistent in summer (June-September). It sets in between 11am and 1pm and can blow up to 30+ knots in the afternoon. The mountainous terrain inland (Sila) creates a channeling effect that strengthens the thermal wind. It is one of the most powerful thermal winds in the Mediterranean.
Hazards
Wind can be very strong (30+ knots) in the afternoon. Significant chop and waves in sustained wind. Coastal current in strong wind. The spot is not suitable for complete beginners despite the sandy beach. Watch out for fishing lines at the beginning and end of the season.
