Overview

Ialissos (Ialyssos) is a historic windsurfing and kitesurfing spot on the northwest coast of Rhodes, adjacent to Ixia. An ancient city site, Ialissos is now a major wind sports hub on the island. The mixed pebble and sand beach benefits from the Meltemi channeled by Rhodes' mountains, offering powerful and reliable side-onshore conditions all summer. The spot has been prized by windsurfers for decades and regularly hosts international competitions.

Ialissos works like Ixia with the NW Meltemi side-onshore. Several professional water sports centers on the beach. Shared sailing area between windsurf, kite, and wing — respect designated spaces. Deep water fairly quickly. Strong wind and chop conditions for intermediate to advanced riders. Works from June to September.

On the water

Aegean Sea, 22-26°C in summer. 2mm shorty or lycra. Pebble/sand/rock bottom. Deep water quickly. Strong to very strong chop, short waves 0.5-1.5m in established Meltemi. Moderate current toward the south.

Parking

Parking along the coastal road and side streets of Ialissos. Water sports centers with dedicated parking for clients. Easy bus access from Rhodes Town. Many hotels and restaurants nearby.

Wind specificities

The Meltemi blows from NW to W at Ialissos, reinforced by the thermal effect of Rhodes' mountains. Conditions nearly identical to neighboring Ixia: 20-30 knots average with gusts to 35+. Very consistent side-onshore wind building around noon and peaking in mid-afternoon. One of the windiest spots in the eastern Aegean Sea. Season from June to September, exceptionally reliable in July-August.

Very strong wind exceeding 30-35 knots in gusts. Powerful choppy conditions. Pebble beach — booties recommended. Dense nautical traffic. Coastal current. Strong sun exposure. Do not sail north toward Rhodes Town port area.
