Overview

Drepani is a spot at the entrance of the Argolic Gulf, on the east coast of the Peloponnese. The beach faces south toward the gulf, a semi-enclosed body of water offering protected conditions and relatively calm water.

The Argolic Gulf is protected from the direct Meltemi by the Argolid peninsula. Rideable winds arrive mainly from the south and SE, penetrating through the gulf's mouth. Drepani, close to the gulf entrance, receives these winds more directly than spots at the head of the gulf.

On the water

Semi-protected gulf water. Light chop (20-40cm) in moderate thermal. Sandy and rocky bottom. Clear, warm water (23-27°C in summer). Progressive depth.

Parking

Parking along the coastal road. Drepani village is small with basic services. Nafplio 15 min away offers all services (hotels, restaurants, magnificent historic town). Access from Athens (2h by highway) or Tripoli (1h).

Wind specificities

S/SE wind entering the Argolic Gulf, 10-18 knots. SE thermal breeze develops reliably in summer afternoons, created by the temperature gradient between the cool gulf and the overheated Argos plain. The Meltemi (NNE) is largely blocked by the Argolid peninsula and arrives very attenuated.

Position at the gulf entrance offering stronger wind than the inner spots (Nafplio, Nea Kios).

Hazards

Rocks on the sides of some beaches. Maritime traffic (ferries to islands, pleasure boats, yachts). Currents at the gulf entrance. Swimmers in summer.
