Ringkøbing Fjord is THE most iconic kitesurfing destination in Denmark. This 300 km² fjord with an average depth of only 1.5 meters offers a vast flat water playground. Located on the eastern shore of the fjord, this spot benefits from prevailing westerly winds blowing onshore across the fjord. The fjord is protected from the North Sea by the Holmsland Klit sand barrier, creating a giant lagoon with perfect conditions.
The Ringkøbing Fjord area features several world-class spots including Kloster, Bork Havn, Skaven Strand and Hvide Sande Nord. It is a must-visit destination featured in every international kitesurf guide.

Spot functioning
The fjord works with virtually any wind direction thanks to its multiple spots spread along its shores. The eastern shore (Ringkøbing side) works as onshore in westerly winds. In north or south winds, simply move to another launch point along the fjord. In easterly winds (offshore here), other spots like Bork Havn work better.

On the water
Ultra-flat water in the fjord, shallow everywhere (knee to waist depth, maximum 1.5 m). Sandy bottom. Westerly winds create perfect flat water conditions on the eastern shore. Some chop can form in strong winds due to the large fetch of the fjord. Ideal conditions for freestyle, foil and learning.
Parking
Accessible by car along the fjord shore. Several launch points around Ringkøbing town with nearby parking areas.
Wind specificities
Prevailing west to southwest winds. Westerly winds are channeled by the flat Jutland landscape and arrive with consistent power over the fjord. Best wind conditions from October to March with 70% chance of kiteable winds. Summer offers regular thermal winds as a complement.
Hazards
Few dangers in the fjord itself - shallow water everywhere makes rescue straightforward. Watch for occasional seaweed. Strong currents near the Hvide Sande outlet to the North Sea. Cold water requiring a 5/3 wetsuit from November to April, 4/3 from May to October.
