Kekaha Beach kitesurf and wingfoil spot
United States · Hawaii
Overview
Kekaha Beach is a long sandy beach on the west coast of Kauai, the oldest and westernmost of Hawaii's main islands, nicknamed "The Garden Isle." This beach stretches for several kilometers along the leeward coast, offering vast space for kitesurfing. Northeast trade winds wrap around the island and arrive from the east/east-northeast. The spot is exposed to open ocean with strong currents and significant swell, reserved for advanced riders. The setting is spectacular with the Na Pali Coast cliffs to the north and Niihau island on the horizon.

On the water
Warm water year-round (24-27°C/75-80°F), no wetsuit needed — a lycra is sufficient. The bottom is primarily sandy. Water is exposed to open ocean with strong currents and significant swell. Shore break can be powerful. No protective reef offshore — direct exposure to south swell in summer and northwest swell in winter. Wind may be less consistent than on Kauai's windward coast.
Hazards
Strong and dangerous currents — this beach is known for powerful rip currents. Shore break can be violent. No protective reef — open ocean. Significant swell possible year-round. Protected sea turtles (honu) — legal distance required. Hawaiian monk seals (critically endangered species) sometimes present on the beach — maintain 50 feet (15 m) distance, it's the law. Sharks (tiger sharks) present in Kauai waters. Humpback whales from December to April — 100 yards distance.
