Overview

Mokuleia is one of the most popular kitesurfing spots on Oahu's North Shore, located at the western end of the famous north coast. The spot offers a long sandy beach with easy water access. Northeast trade winds blow side-onshore, creating excellent kitesurfing conditions. In summer, the water is relatively flat and accessible. In winter, massive North Pacific swells transform this spot into expert-level terrain with spectacular waves. Note: Dillingham Airfield is right next door — skydivers and gliders regularly fly over the area.

On the water

Warm water year-round (24-27°C/75-80°F), no wetsuit needed — a lycra is sufficient. The bottom is a mix of sand and coral reef. In summer (May-September), water is relatively flat and accessible to intermediate riders. In winter (October-April), north swells create massive waves reserved for experts. Strong currents along the coast, reinforced by swell. Shore break can be powerful.
