Overview

Sandy Beach (Sandy's) is one of Oahu's most famous and dangerous spots, located on the southeast coast near Hawaii Kai. Famous for its devastating shore break, this spot is nicknamed "Break-Neck Beach" due to the number of neck injuries caused by the waves. Northeast trade winds cross the Ko'olau range and arrive from the east, creating extremely windy conditions. Kitesurfing is possible but STRICTLY reserved for experts capable of handling a violent shore break, strong and turbulent winds, and powerful currents. The spot is also known for its bodyboarding competitions.

On the water

Warm water year-round (24-27°C/75-80°F), no wetsuit needed. The bottom is sandy near shore with reef offshore. The shore break is one of the most powerful in Hawaii — waves crash directly on sand with extreme violence. Strong and unpredictable currents. Wind is generally very strong and can be turbulent due to nearby coastal cliffs. Conditions are among the most demanding on Oahu.

Hazards

Potentially turbulent wind near cliffs — watch for gusts and wind shadow zones. Reef offshore. Protected sea turtles (honu) — legal distance. Sharks (tiger sharks) reported offshore. Humpback whales from December to April — 100 yards. Halona Blowhole nearby — dangerous currents.
