Overview

Gull Isle is a sandbar/small island in Pamlico Sound, off the soundside coast of Hatteras Island between Salvo and Avon. This unique spot is accessed by riding out from the sound — you need to kite out to the sandbar. The island is a refuge for seabirds (hence "Gull Isle" — seagull island). Water around it is shallow and flat, offering a unique playground in the middle of the sound. Intermediate spot as it requires riding through deeper water to get there.

On the water

Flat water on Pamlico Sound around a sandbar. Depth varies — shallow on the bar, deeper around it. Sandy bottom on the bar itself. The spot offers a unique experience of riding "in the middle of nowhere" on the sound. Excellent conditions for freeride and wingfoil.

Hazards

Requires riding through deeper water to reach the bar — not suitable for beginners. Respect wildlife — seabirds nest on the island, keep distance from nesting areas. Stingrays possible. Jellyfish in summer. Isolated in the middle of the sound — if wind dies, the swim back is long. Afternoon thunderstorms possible in summer.
