Overview

Fort Morgan is located at the tip of the Fort Morgan Peninsula, at the eastern entrance of Mobile Bay. The historic fort (built 1819-1834) played a key role during the American Civil War in the Battle of Mobile Bay (1864). The spot is advanced due to very powerful tidal currents at the bay entrance. The beach faces south on the Gulf and east on the bay entrance channel. Conditions can be complex with converging currents. A ferry connects Fort Morgan to Dauphin Island. Spot reserved for experienced riders.

On the water

Gulf waves on the south side, powerful currents on the east side (Mobile Bay entrance). Tidal currents at the bay entrance are among the strongest on the Gulf Coast. Sandy bottom. Conditions change dramatically with the tide. In SE to SW winds, conditions are interesting but currents add significant complexity.

Hazards

Extremely powerful tidal currents at Mobile Bay entrance — NEVER ride in the main channel. Risk of being pulled into the Gulf. Heavy maritime traffic: cargo ships, ferries, fishing boats. Sharks frequent in the inlet area (fishing zone). Stingrays. Jellyfish. Violent thunderstorms in summer. Hurricanes possible. Spot reserved for experts with knowledge of local currents.
