Overview

Nehalem Bay State Park is a kitesurfing spot on the sand spit separating Nehalem Bay from the Pacific Ocean, on Oregon's north coast. This state park offers unique access to both the ocean (west side) and the protected bay (east side). The long ocean beach is exposed to North Pacific swells. The bay side offers a calmer alternative during overly strong ocean conditions. The park features a campground and full facilities.

On the water

Cold water year-round (10-14°C), 4/3 wetsuit minimum in summer, 5/3 in winter. Ocean side: waves of 1 to 2.5 meters with powerful swell, sandy bottom, frequent rip currents. Bay side: calmer waters, shallow, tide-influenced. Northwest thermal winds cross the spit, providing wind on both sides.

Hazards

Ocean side: very dangerous sneaker waves, violent rip currents, massive driftwood. Bay side: tidal currents at the Nehalem Bay mouth, shifting sandbars. Never ride near the bay mouth. Very cold water risking hypothermia. Frequent coastal fog. The spit is narrow: risk of drifting from one side to the other. Respect the park's camping and picnic areas.
