Kitesurf

Hug Point is a spectacular spot located between Cannon Beach and Arch Cape on Oregon's north coast. Its name comes from the era when travelers had to "hug" the cliff to pass at low tide. The spot features impressive rock formations, sea caves, a waterfall that drops directly onto the beach, and tide pools. This is an expert-only spot due to the extremely rocky environment and the beach that nearly disappears entirely at high tide.

On the water

Cold water year-round (10-14°C), 4/3 wetsuit minimum in summer, 5/3 with hood and gloves in winter. Powerful waves of 1 to 3 meters breaking on ubiquitous rocks. Rocky and sandy bottom with many exposed reefs. Very complex currents around rock formations and in caves. Tide is a critical factor: at high tide, the beach disappears and launching/landing becomes impossible.

Hazards

Ubiquitous rocks making this spot extremely dangerous for kitesurfing. Beach disappears at high tide, trapping people against cliffs. Sea caves with dangerous suction currents. Sneaker waves particularly treacherous near the cliffs. Complex currents around rock formations. Waterfall and vertical rock walls leaving no margin for error. No quick rescue possible. Spot strictly reserved for experts with perfect knowledge of the area.
