Overview

Jockey's Ridge State Park is home to the tallest natural sand dune on the US East Coast (approximately 100 feet high). This iconic state park offers two types of riding: landkiting on the vast sandy expanses of the dunes, and kitesurfing on Roanoke Sound on the park's west side. This is where Kitty Hawk Kites launched its first hang gliding and kite lessons. The soundside offers flat and shallow water, perfect for beginners. The dunes provide a spectacular landscape and excellent wind conditions thanks to their elevation.

Sound side: flat water on Roanoke Sound, shallow, sandy bottom. Ideal conditions for learning kitesurfing. Dune side: vast sandy expanse for landkiting and power kiting. Wind is often stronger and more consistent at the dune top than at water level. Water is warm in summer.

Hazards

On the dunes: hard ground in places, wear protection for landkiting. Excessive heat possible in summer on sand. Stingrays in the sound — do the stingray shuffle. Jellyfish in summer. Respect protected park zones — some dune areas are under regeneration. Afternoon thunderstorms possible in summer. State park with regulations — check rules for kiting activities.
