Boulder Beach / Lake Mead kitesurf and wingfoil spot
United States · Nevada
Overview
Boulder Beach is a spot on Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States (by capacity), formed by the Hoover Dam on the Colorado River, just 30 minutes from Las Vegas. The spot offers a spectacular desert setting with red sandstone cliffs and turquoise waters. Afternoon thermal wind blows from the south/southwest, created by the intense desert heating. The lake is massive (250 sq mi) and offers a vast water area. Conditions are suitable for intermediate riders. WARNING: lake level has dropped dramatically due to the chronic drought in the American West.

On the water
Fresh water with temperature ranging from 13°C/55°F in winter to 28°C/82°F in summer. Shorty or lycra sufficient in summer (water is warm!), 3/2mm wetsuit in spring and fall. The bottom is sandy and rocky. Chop can be significant on this massive lake in sustained wind. Lake level has dropped over 50 m (170 ft) since 2000 — launch areas change frequently. Water is clear and turquoise thanks to the Colorado River source.
Hazards
EXTREME heat in summer — temperatures exceeding 45°C (113°F) in the desert around the lake. Hydration vital, heatstroke possible. Intense sun — sun protection essential. Violent thunderstorms possible in summer (Arizona monsoon). Lake level constantly declining — newly exposed rocks and obstacles. Heavy motorboat traffic, especially on weekends. Thermal wind can develop rapidly in the afternoon. Rocky cliffs along shoreline. No natural shade.
