Overview

Bucktown is a kitesurf spot on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain, in the historic Bucktown neighborhood of Metairie, a suburb of New Orleans. The spot is adjacent to the 17th Street Canal, famous for its levee breach during Hurricane Katrina. The launch is from the lake shore with direct access to the shallow, flat waters of Pontchartrain. Very close to West End, offering an alternative with different parking and access.

Shallow Lake Pontchartrain water, sandy to muddy bottom. Flat to choppy conditions depending on wind. Brackish water, warm in summer (28-30°C). No notable tide. Chop can develop quickly in sustained wind thanks to the lake's large fetch. Ideal for freeride and progression in moderate conditions.

Hazards

Sudden tropical thunderstorms with lightning — monitor weather constantly. Alligators possible along shores and canals. Floating debris after rains. Currents at the mouth of the 17th Street Canal. The lake can become very rough quickly. Boat traffic in the area.
