Overview

Curry Hammock State Park is THE quintessential kitesurfing spot in the Florida Keys, located on Long Point Key in the Middle Keys. This state park offers bay side (Florida Bay) access with turquoise shallow waters extending for hundreds of meters, creating an ideal playground for all levels. The easterly trade winds blow side-shore across the bay's flat water, offering perfect conditions almost daily from November to May. It is one of the most renowned spots in the United States for learning to kite, with an active local community and several schools nearby.

On the water

The bay side water body is exceptionally flat and shallow, with a sandy and seagrass bottom allowing you to stand up over large distances. In easterly trade winds, conditions are perfectly flat with crystal clear water. Depth varies from 1 to 5 feet depending on the tide, offering maximum safety for beginners. In northerly winds (cold fronts), a light chop can form but conditions remain very manageable. The water is warm year-round (75-86°F), allowing riding in boardshorts for most of the year.

Hazards

Tidal currents can be present between the islands, particularly during tide changes. Watch for seagrass beds that may hide stingrays — shuffle your feet when walking in the water (stingray shuffle). The park's swimming area is separated from the kite zone — respect the boundaries. A state park parking permit is required. Plan for maximum sun protection as the glare from the shallow water is intense.
