Totora Surf School & Hostel

Totora Surf School was founded in 2016 in Huanchaco, northern Peru, by Diego Venegas, founder and head instructor, who wanted to share surfing in a safe and friendly way. Totora Hostel was added so that students can stay on site, facing the ocean.

The school teaches all levels: an introductory lesson (30 minutes of beach theory, then 1 hour in the water), a 1.5-hour improvement lesson with a warm-up and session videos, and a filmed session with video analysis. Board and wetsuit are provided on the day of the lesson.

Huanchaco is the birthplace of the caballito de totora, the reed boat of local fishermen, regarded as the ancestor of surfing. The school offers the chance to learn to paddle and surf on a caballito. It also runs surf trips to other spots on the northern coast, such as Chicama.
