Urcia Surf School

Urcia Surf School is a surf school founded in 2002 in Huanchaco, on Peru's north coast, run by professional surfer Juninho Urcia, a former Latin American champion, and his family. The Urcias have lived in Huanchaco for generations and come from fishing families who sail traditional reed caballitos de totora.

The school gives private or group lessons (a maximum of three students per instructor), from beginner to intermediate; each lesson lasts an hour and a half and takes place at different breaks depending on conditions and level. For experienced surfers it offers coaching, with optional video analysis, and rents boards (longboards, funboards, shortboards) with wetsuits and boots; rental is included in lessons.

It also organises surf trips to Chicama and Pacasmayo, a caballito de totora tour with a ceviche lunch, Spanish lessons, yoga and massages. Its Surf House, a small surf hostel less than 200 m from the beach (Av. Dean Saavedra 582), has private rooms and dorms, with a fully equipped kitchen and wifi.
