Kite Surf Leucate (KSL) is a non-profit association founded in 2004 on Les Coussoules beach at La Franqui (municipality of Leucate), to organise kitesurfing on this spot, keep it safe and bring its riders together. The club is affiliated to the FFVL (French free flight federation) and holds a Youth and Sports approval; it is also part of the sailing network (a sailing passport is required at the first lesson, and the regional sailing league and departmental sailing committee are among its partners). Its water sports base, at the back of the beach, has a terrace, a kitchen and lockers for members' equipment.
The association runs a school whose instructors hold the French state diploma (BPJEPS). Kitesurf lessons last 3 hours with no more than three students per instructor: beginner lessons, improvement (jumps, foil, surf and strapless boards), supervised sessions for independent riders, and one- or two-hour coaching; depending on conditions, the school takes students to the best area of the day and may teach at sea from a boat. For wing, students progress from winging on a centreboard board to boat-towed foiling holding a bar, then wingfoiling, in 2-hour lessons (up to three students for beginners, two for improvers). There are also five-day courses for adults and for 8-12 and 13-17 year-olds, towed sessions behind a boat (useful when there is no wind), and land activities: traction kites, buggy and mountainboard. The club rents current-year kite and wing gear (Core, North, F-One, Duotone), twin-tip, surf and foil boards, and stand-up paddleboards.
In tramontane conditions, when the wind blows offshore, the club runs a safety and equipment recovery service from 1 April to the autumn school holidays, between La Franqui village and Le Rouet; GPS units are lent to foilers who leave the marked area (300 m by 1.2 km). On the club side, the Team Jeunes welcomes children from age 8 from April to October, the Team Performance trains 8-18 year-olds from September to June for French Sailing Federation competitions, and KSL coaches the kitesurf sports section of the Corbières Maritimes secondary school in Sigean. It also hosts French championships (kitefoil and freestyle, wingfoil) and offers a preparation course for the entry tests of the BPJEPS kite and wing instructor diploma.
