Overview

Minnesota Point (also known as Park Point) is a 10 km long sand spit located in Duluth, on the western shore of Lake Superior. The 22nd Street access provides a beautiful sandy beach facing the lake, with a vast open water area on the largest of the Great Lakes. The spot benefits from an east/southeast exposure that effectively captures prevailing winds. The proximity to downtown Duluth and Superior (Wisconsin) makes it an easily accessible spot with all services nearby. With northeast winds, the fetch can generate significant waves, creating dynamic conditions for kiting and windsurfing.

On the water

The water body consists of Lake Superior waters, with a gently sloping sandy bottom allowing easy launching. In moderate winds, conditions are relatively flat near shore with light chop offshore. In strong northeast or east winds, waves of 1-2 meters can form thanks to the lake's long fetch. The water is cold year-round (drysuit recommended from September to June). Riding is parallel to the beach with plenty of space to ride safely.

Hazards

Lake Superior is known for its cold waters that can cause rapid hypothermia in case of prolonged immersion — an appropriate wetsuit or drysuit is essential. Weather conditions can change rapidly with the arrival of violent thunderstorms. In strong east or northeast winds, waves can become powerful. Watch for maritime traffic in the Duluth harbor shipping channel, visible to the northeast of the spot. Lateral drift currents are possible in heavy swells.
