Grand Traverse Bay water body (west arm), more sheltered than open Lake Michigan. Moderate chop rather than large waves, with flat water to light chop conditions depending on wind. Cold water requiring full wetsuit except in midsummer. Sandy bottom. The bay offers a vast riding area with few obstacles. Crystal-clear waters typical of the region.
Hazards
Boat traffic in summer with recreational boats and sailboats in the bay. Cold water with hypothermia risk in spring and fall. The peninsula tip can create currents and variable wind effects. Violent thunderstorms possible in summer with lightning risk — exit water immediately. Frequent swimmers and kayakers along the shore in summer.
