Overview

Sanibel Causeway is THE quintessential kitesurfing spot of Southwest Florida, located on the islands of the causeway connecting Fort Myers to Sanibel Island. The causeway islands offer shallow water in all directions — San Carlos Bay to the north and south, with a white sandy bottom. It's the Hobie Beach / Courtney Campbell of Southwest Florida: flat water, shallow, perfect for learning. Several kite schools operate from the causeway. The sunsets over the gulf are spectacular.

On the water

The San Carlos Bay water body is shallow with a white sandy bottom. Depth varies from 1 to 5 feet depending on the tide. All wind directions work as the islands are surrounded by water. In any wind direction, there's a sheltered side for launching. The water is warm and generally clear. Ideal flat water conditions. The riding space is extensive in the bay.

Hazards

Watch for stingrays (stingray shuffle). The tide significantly influences depth — check schedules. Boat traffic is heavy in the causeway channel. Dolphins and manatees frequent the area — respect these protected species. Paid parking on the causeway islands. Note: Sanibel was severely hit by Hurricane Ian in 2022 — check current access conditions.
