Key Largo kitesurf and wingfoil spot
United States · Florida
Overview
Key Largo is the first major island in the Florida Keys coming from the mainland, and this bay side (Florida Bay) spot offers access to sheltered shallow waters. The easterly trade winds blow toward the bay, creating an extensive flat water area. Key Largo is the gateway to the Keys from Miami, easily accessible via US-1. The spot is also close to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the first underwater park in the United States. The local kite community is active, with several schools offering lessons in the shallow waters of Florida Bay.

On the water
The Florida Bay water body is shallow with a sandy, seagrass and small coral bottom. In trade winds, the wind blows from the island toward the bay, offering flat water conditions. Depth varies from 1 to 5 feet with the tide. The water is warm and fairly clear, though sometimes more turbid than in the Middle Keys. The bay offers a vast riding space with few obstacles.
Hazards
Watch for small coral heads and rocks in certain areas — the bottom is not uniformly sandy. Stingrays are present in seagrass. Tidal currents exist between channels. In trade winds, the wind blows from land toward open bay — beginners should stay in shallow areas to be able to walk back. Boat traffic is frequent, particularly dive boats heading to the reefs.
