Overview
Oscoda is a kitesurf spot located on the western shore of Lake Huron, in northeastern Lower Michigan, at the mouth of the Au Sable River. This area offers a long sandy beach lined with dunes and pine forests, with an open water body on Lake Huron. East and northeast winds generate interesting waves for surfing. The former Wurtsmith Air Force Base site provides a unique landscape along the coast.

On the water
Lake Huron water body with east exposure. East to northeast winds create waves of 1 to 2 meters, sometimes more in strong winds, offering good surf conditions. Water is cold, especially north of Saginaw Bay: full wetsuit required from September to June, recommended even in summer. Current at the mouth of the Au Sable River can affect riding nearby.
Hazards
Currents at the Au Sable River mouth that can carry riders. Cold Lake Huron water with significant hypothermia risk. Longshore drift currents in strong winds. Driftwood and debris possible near the river mouth. Violent summer thunderstorms possible — exit water immediately if lightning. Relatively remote area with limited rescue services nearby.
