Overview

Ervatao is a remote and spectacular wave spot on the southeast coast of Boa Vista Island, Cape Verde. Widely considered the most beautiful spot on the island — a vast pristine beach backed by a small oasis of palm trees, with turquoise water and powerful waves. An old shipwreck visible on the beach adds to the atmosphere.

The spot produces a well-shaped left-hand wave breaking along the beach, perfect for kitesurfing and surfing. Requires a 1.5-hour 4x4 journey from Sal Rei. Zero infrastructure, zero rescue. Advanced to expert riders only.

The beach is an important sea turtle nesting site — respect the environment.

Parking

Ervatao is on the southeast coast of Boa Vista, roughly 1.5 hours by 4x4 from Sal Rei via the abandoned village of João Barrosa. Cost ~€60 return (€80 via south coast/Curral Velho).

No infrastructure — bring everything. Guided trips from kite schools recommended for first visits.

Hazards

ADVANCED TO EXPERT ONLY. Side-offshore wind — equipment failure pushes you out to sea. Never ride alone. Powerful waves over sand and reef. Complete isolation: 1.5h from Sal Rei, no rescue, no mobile signal, no hospital on Boa Vista. Strong currents possible. Protected turtle nesting zone. 4x4 can get stuck in soft sand.

Wind specificities

NE trade wind blows side-offshore. 15–25 knots in season (November–May). Wind is more regular near the shipwreck area. The side-offshore angle grooms wave faces beautifully. Kites 7–12m.
