Neeltje Jans kitesurf, wingfoil and windsurf spot
Netherlands · Zélande
Overview
Neeltje Jans is an artificial island built between Walcheren and Schouwen-Duiveland during the construction of the Delta Works, one of the greatest hydraulic engineering projects in the world. The kitesurfing spot lies on the North Sea-facing beach at the foot of the iconic large wind turbines, with a direct view of the Oosterschelde storm surge barrier.
The beach is wide and open, ideal for kite setup. Conditions vary significantly with the tide: at low tide, an extensive shallow water area makes it perfect for beginners to stand; at high tide, waves pick up and the beach narrows. The kitesurf zone runs from the dike with wind turbines to the nudist beach sign — approximately 400 metres of designated area.
Neeltje Jans is the best alternative to Vrouwenpolder when the wind swings southwest — the most common direction here. No showers or toilets directly at the spot.

Spot functioning
Walk to the beach from the parking under the bridge (5–10 min). Set up your kite on the wide beach southwest of the wind turbines. The navigation zone extends 400m east to the nudist beach sign. Wind is predominantly side-shore to slightly onshore — easy return to beach. Open year-round; in winter a 5/4mm wetsuit with gloves and booties is essential.

Parking
From Vrouwenpolder, take the exit "Delta Park Neeltje Jans". Keep turning right at every junction and drive all the way back. You come out under the main road next to the lock. Park under the bridge next to the lock. Approximately 5–10 minutes walk to the kitesurf beach.
Wind specificities
Neeltje Jans works exclusively with onshore/side-shore wind from SW to N. Southwest is the prime direction — consistent, slightly side-shore, making it easy to return upwind. Wind is generally steady as it arrives from open sea with no obstacles.
In summer (April–August), the dominant direction is NW. In autumn/winter (September–March), SW dominates with regular storm fronts. Zeeland is the sunniest region in the Netherlands.
When wind blows from E, SE, S or NE, the spot is offshore and unsafe — head to Baarland or Borssele on the Westerschelde side instead.
Hazards
⚠️ Tides: At high tide the beach narrows and waves increase — intermediate level only. At low tide: shallow water and wide beach, ideal for beginners.
⚠️ Wind turbines: Stay at least 100 metres away from the turbines to avoid turbulence and benefit from more stable wind.
⚠️ Restricted zone: Kitesurfing is only permitted in the designated 400m area between the dike and the nudist beach sign. Strictly respect zone limits.
⚠️ Offshore winds (E, SE, S, NE): Absolutely forbidden on this spot — risk of being blown out into the North Sea.
