Pointe de Grignon is a kitesurf spot at the northwest tip of the Ile de Ré, close to the Phare des Baleines. The exposed position gives excellent west and northwest wind conditions with Atlantic swell. One of several spots clustered at the island tip offering different wind angles depending on tide configuration. Classic Ile de Ré spot for intermediate to advanced riders.

Launch from the beach near the Pointe de Grignon. Best at mid to low tide when the beach is widest. Multiple beach orientations around the tip allow choice based on exact wind direction. Self-organised spot, no formal zones.

On the water

Atlantic beach exposed to ocean swell — waves 0.3 to 1.2m in westerly conditions. Sandy bottom, significant tidal range. Tidal currents around the tip of the island. Flat water on the sheltered (east) side of the tip in northwest wind.

Wind specificities

The northwest tip of Ile de Ré is fully exposed to Atlantic west and northwest winds with a very long oceanic fetch. Wind acceleration around the cape is notable. The multiple beach orientations around the tip mean that there is almost always a usable angle regardless of exact wind direction between south and northwest. Thermal west wind builds reliably in summer afternoons.
