Overview
La Franqui - Coussoules is a spot beach on the Aude coast, venue of the Mondial du vent since 1997. The kite zone, near the lifeguard post, is run by the KSL association and open to schools and free-riders; windsurfing is done to the north, upwind. The tramontane (offshore wind) gives flat water; the south-east brings waves. The large beach suits all levels.

Year-round. KSL safety April to November (packages: day, week, month, season — not mandatory if level sufficient). Summer zoning June 15-Sept 15: kite only in front of KSL and in the Grazel. Mondial du Vent in April — beaches partially reserved for the event. Camping des Coussoules: direct spot access.

Mediterranean Sea. By Tramontane: FLAT offshore — absolute glass, crystal water, speed and freestyle. By Marin: onshore waves, well-shaped thanks to the Cape. Shallow for 20 m, deeper beyond. Sandy bottom. Water 14-16°C winter, 20-24°C summer.

Wind specificities
Tramontane (NW/NNW): dominant wind, 300+ days/year, often 25+ knots. OFFSHORE — smooths the sea to glass. Riders on 5-9 m². Weather forecasts often UNDERESTIMATE actual wind on site. "La Divine Tram" — riders love this constant, powerful wind.
Marin (SE/S): onshore waves. More regular than elsewhere thanks to Cap Leucate. Easy thermal in summer. Surf-kite, wave riding.
Mondial du Vent spot — hosts international championships every spring.

Kiting banned at the La Franqui channel exit, under the cliff (Leucate tourist-office guide 2025-26).
