Overview
Baltrum is the smallest of the seven East Frisian islands (5 km long, 1.4 km wide), located between Norderney and Langeoog. An entirely car-free island with no camping — accessible only by ferry from Neßmersiel. A hidden gem among German kiters thanks to its exceptional riding area: a large sandbank 400-500m from the shore creates two atmospheres depending on the tide. At low tide (2h before and after LW): the sandbank is exposed and forms a huge shallow flat water area of 600 x 100m — ideal for learning and flat freeride. At high tide: waves pass over the sandbank generating a nice surf/kite zone with moderate breaking. Large sandy beach with sufficient space to set up and launch the kite. Two official NordSBefV zones: Nordstrand (all season) and Südstrand (April-November). Two kite schools on site.

Spot functioning
Access by ferry from Neßmersiel (cars left in paid parking on the mainland side). On the island: travel on foot or by bike only. Main spot at the first beach access of the Nordstrand. Two schools on site: Surfschule Baltrum (Uli Mammen, surfschule-baltrum.de) and Kiteschule at the Surferhus (kiteschule-baltrum.de) — lessons and equipment rental, accommodation possible. Check tide times before departing.

Wind specificities
W/NW/N dominant and best on the Nordstrand (side-onshore). SW works on the Südstrand on the Watt side (free wind from the continent). The sandbank protects from raw swell and "sorts" the waves — conditions more clement than in open sea. Late August/early September = best wind/temperature ratio. Tide-dependent spot: flat water at low tide, waves at high tide.
Hazards
Strong currents at rising tide — waves and current intensify rapidly when the sandbank is covered. Do not overestimate your abilities at mid-high tide. Constantly monitor the evolution of the water. Buhnen (groynes) and currents to respect. Seal zone (Robbenstrand) on the island — never approach (strict Nationalpark protection zones). Return on foot or by bike only — entirely car-free island.
