Overview
Apache Lake is a remote reservoir set in the Superstition Mountains east of Phoenix. Accessible only via the Apache Trail (winding unpaved road), this narrow canyon lake offers a spectacular wild setting. Thermal winds funnel through the canyon in the afternoon. Spot reserved for self-sufficient riders due to its isolation — no rescue services nearby. Lake levels vary considerably with the seasons.

On the water
Freshwater with good visibility. Water temperature from 10°C in winter to 27°C in summer. Narrow lake set in a rocky canyon. Variable chop depending on wind direction in the canyon. Rocky bottom with dangerous shallows when water level is low. 3/2 wetsuit recommended except in midsummer.
Hazards
Extreme isolation: no rescue services, no cell phone coverage. Unpaved, winding, and dangerous access road (Apache Trail). Extreme summer heat (43°C+). Canyon creating violent gusts and unpredictable turbulence. Rattlesnakes, scorpions, javelinas (peccaries). Dangerous rocky shallows at low water levels. Monsoon thunderstorms with flash floods in the canyon. Experienced and self-sufficient riders only.
